We report first-principles density-functional calculations for hydroquinone (HQ), indolequinone (IQ), and semiquinone (SQ). These molecules are believed to be the basic building blocks of the eumelanins, a class of biomacromolecules with important biological functions (including photoprotection) and with the potential for certain bioengineering applications. We have used the difference of self-consistent fields method to study the energy gap between the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, Delta(HL). We show that Delta(HL) is similar in IQ and SQ, but approximately twice as large in HQ. This may have important implications for our understanding of the observed broadband optical absorption of the eumelanins. The possibility of using this difference in Delta(HL) to molecularly engineer the electronic properties of eumelanins is discussed. We calculate the infrared and Raman spectra of the three redox forms from first principles. Each of the molecules have significantly different infrared and Raman signatures, and so these spectra could be used in situ to nondestructively identify the monomeric content of macromolecules. It is hoped that this may be a helpful analytical tool in determining the structure of eumelanin macromolecules and hence in helping to determine the structure-property-function relationships that control the behavior of the eumelanins. 相似文献

Thiol-functionalized organosilica microspheres were synthesized via a two-step process: (1) acid-catalyzed hydrolysis and condensation of 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS), followed by (2) base-catalyzed condensation, which led to the rapid formation of emulsion droplets with a narrow size distribution. These droplets continued to condense to form solid microspheres. Solution (29)Si NMR and optical microscopy were applied to study the mechanism of this novel synthetic route. Solid-state (29)Si NMR, SEM, zeta potential titration, and Coulter counter measurements were used to study the bulk and surface properties and to determine the particle size distributions of the final microspheres. Compared to conventional St?ber silica particles, these microspheres were shown to have a lower degree of cross-linking (average degree of condensation, r = 1.25), a larger average size (up to 6 microm), and a higher isoelectric point (pH = 4.4). Confocal microscopy of dye-labeled microspheres showed an even distribution of dye molecules throughout the interior, characteristic of a readily accessible and permeable organosilica network. These findings have implications for the production of functionalized solid supports for use in catalysis and biological applications, such as optically encoded carriers for combinatorial synthesis. 相似文献

Hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene/isophorone diisocyanate (HTPB/IPDI) polyurethane rubber which was aged in air at elevated temperatures has been studied by infrared microspectroscopy. Spectra were collected in transmission mode on microtomed samples. Analysis of sets of spectra taken across the sectioned material showed that most of the degradation occurred in the polybutadiene part of the polymer and that the urethane linkage was essentially unchanged. The trans isomer of the polybutadiene appears to be preferentially degraded compared with the vinyl isomer. The IR technique does not provide significant information about the cis isomer. The IR spectra indicated that likely degradation products included acids, esters, alcohols, and small amounts of other products containing a carbonyl functional group. Band area ratios, supported by a principal components analysis, were used to derive degradation profiles for the material. Highly ordered rod-like large-pore periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) was successfully synthesized at low acid concentration with the assistance of inorganic salt using triblock copolymer P123 as a template. The roles of inorganic salt and acidity in the production of highly ordered mesostructure and the morphology control of PMOs were investigated. It was found that the inorganic salt can significantly widen the range of the synthesis parameters to produce highly ordered 2D hexagonal pore structure of p6mm symmetry. However, the uniform rod-like PMOs can only be synthesized in a narrow range of acid and salt concentrations, which were sensitive to induction time. The adsorption of lysozyme on PMO was studied at different pH values in comparison with adsorption on pure silica material under controlled morphology and pore structure. It was found that the adsorption capacity of lysozyme on the PMO was lower than that on pure SBA-15 silica material and the adsorption amounts are larger at pH 9.6 than at 7.0 for both materials. The results show that the electrostatic interaction between lysozyme and PMO/SBA-15 surface is more dominant than the hydrophobic forces and the interaction of neighboring lysozyme molecules also plays an important role. 相似文献

We study here the adsorption of hexane on nanoporous MCM-41 silica at 303,313, and 323 K, for various pore diameters between 2.40 and 4.24 nm. Adsorption equilibria, measured thermogravimetrically, show that all the isotherms, that are somewhat akin to those of type V, exhibit remarkably sharp capillary adsorption phase transition steps and are reversible. The position of the phase transition step gradually shifts from low to high relative pressure with an increase in the temperature as well as the pore sizes. The isosteric heats of adsorption derived from the equilibrium information using the Clapeyron equation reveal a gradual decrease with increasing adsorbed amount because of the surface heterogeneity but approach a constant value near the phase transition. A decrease in the pore size results in an increase in the isosteric heat of adsorption because of the increased dispersion forces. A simple strategy, based on the Broekhoff and De Boer adsorption theory, successfully interprets the hexane adsorption isotherms for the different pore size MCM-41 samples. The parameters of an empirical expression, used to represent the potential of interaction between the adsorbate and adsorbent, are obtained by fitting the monolayer region prior to capillary condensation and the experimental phase transition simultaneously, for some pore sizes. Subsequently, the parameters are used to predict the adsorption isotherm on other pore size samples, which showed good agreement with experimental data. 相似文献

The
mineral sabugalite (HAl)0.5[(UO2)2(PO4)]2⋅8H2O, has been studied using a combination of energy
dispersive X-ray analysis, X-ray diffraction, dynamic and controlled rate
thermal analysis techniques. X-ray diffraction shows that the starting material
in the thermal decomposition is sabugalite and the product of the thermal
treatment is a mixture of aluminium and uranyl phosphates. Four mass loss
steps are observed for the dehydration of sabugalite at 48°C (temperature
range 39 to 59°C), 84°C (temperature range 59 to 109°C), 127°C
(temperature range 109 to 165°C) and around 270°C (temperature range
175 to 525°C) with mass losses of 2.8, 6.5, 2.3 and 4.4%, respectively,
making a total mass loss of water of 16.0%. In the CRTA experiment mass loss
stages were found at 60, 97, 140 and 270°C which correspond to four dehydration
steps involving the loss of 2, 6, 6 and 2 moles of water. These mass losses
result in the formation of four phases namely meta(I)sabugalite, meta(II)sabugalite,
meta(III)sabugalite and finally uranyl phosphate and alumina phosphates. The
use of a combination of dynamic and controlled rate thermal analysis techniques
enabled a definitive study of the thermal decomposition of sabugalite. While
the temperature ranges and the mass losses vary due to the different experimental
conditions, the results of the CRTA analysis should be considered as standard
data due to the quasi-equilibrium nature of the thermal decomposition process.

The volatile products from the γ irradiation of samples of poly(vinyl chloride) prepared under different conditions and reduced to the corresponding polyethylenes have been measured quantitatively and compared with those for low- and high-density polyethylenes and copolymers of ethylene with small amounts of α-olefins. The presence of methyl branches is clearly demonstrated and there is also evidence for ethyl and butyl branches, although these had not been considered significant in previous [13C] NMR studies. The method is shown to be extremely sensitive to small quantities of residual trialkyl tin hydride reductant occluded in, and possibly also reacted with, the polymer, and to residual chlorine (<0.5%). The yields of alkanes are higher than expected from the branch frequencies determined by i.r. and [13C] NMR and results for ethylene-α-olefin copolymers. This difference is apparently due to sensitisation of the radiation degradation by residual chlorine and reductant. Quantitative determinations of branch frequencies by the radiolytic method are unlikely to be obtained until these problems are overcome. 相似文献

The time lag permeation technique has proven to bean effective method for characterisation. Because of the simple nature of the permeation experiment, transport parameters can be directly obtained from experimental data hence avoiding the intensive mathematical treatment required by other techniques. The method has historically been applied to diffusion and adsorption in porous membranes and diffusion in polymer membranes. Since its origins in 1920, interest in the time lag method has expanded because of its value in characterising simple permeation processes and also complex systems of diffusion with simultaneous adsorption and surface diffusion. This review focuses on presenting the asymptotic solution of the mass balance diffusion equations and includes applications of time lag analysis, in order to give a critical and broad perspective of this method as a tool for characterisation. It includes much of the previously published literature in order to show that for most cases the asymptotic solution of the transport equations is simple, and for more complex cases that an analytical solution is possible hence avoiding cumbersome numerical techniques. 相似文献

Abstract— Increased sensitivity to UV light has been demonstrated in Phytohaemagglutinin stimulated lymphocytes from normal and tumour-bearing Hereford cattle when compared to lymphocytes from other breeds. Trypan blue exclusion and inhibition of DNA synthesis were used to determine cell viability. The results obtained from time course and radiation dose experiments demonstrate biphasic survival kinetics. This is indicative of at least two separate cell populations, exhibiting differentia! sensitivity to UV. The increased sensitivity to UV observed in Herefords may reflect a general sensitivity to UV or alternatively a different cellular constitution in the mitogen stimulated cultures. DNA repair synthesis, measured in the presence of hydroxyurea, was of similar levels in cell cultures from Herefords and one of the control breeds. 相似文献

The evaluation of the use of alkaline peroxodisulfate digestion with low pressure microwave, autoclave or hot water bath heating for the determination of total phosphorus and nitrogen in turbid lake and river waters is described. The efficiency of these digestion procedures were compared to a Kjeldahl digestion procedure with sulphuric acid-potassium sulfate and copper sulfate. The final solution before digestion was 0.045 M in potassium peroxodisulfate and 0.04 M in sodium hydroxide. Procedures were evaluated by the analysis of suspensions of two reference materials, National Institute of Environmental Science, Japan, no. 3 Chlorella and no. 2 pond sediment and natural turbid waters. Best recoveries of phosphorus and nitrogen by microwave heating were obtained when solutions were digested at 95 °C for 40 min. Quantitative recoveries of phosphorus from Chlorella suspensions up to 1000 mg/l were obtained by all three heating procedures, but incomplete recoveries of nitrogen occurred above 20 mg N/l in the digested sample. Good recoveries of phosphorus and nitrogen from suspended sediment suspensions were obtained only from solutions containing <150 mg/l of suspended sediments. Recoveries of phosphorus from phosphorus compounds containing COP and CP bonds added to distilled water were quantitative (94-113%) except for polyphosphates (microwave, 34±8; autoclave, 114±6; water bath, 96±4) and aluminium phosphate (8-23%). Recoveries of nitrogen compounds containing CN bonds added to distilled water were quantitative (94-96%). The analysis of a range of natural turbid water samples by alkaline peroxodisulfate and microwave, autoclave and water bath heating gave similar total phosphorus and nitrogen results. All procedures using alkaline peroxodisulfate underestimate phosphorus concentrations at high suspended sediment concentrations (>150 mg/l) and are only suitable for the analysis of very turbid samples when the turbidity is due to organic matter (algal cells, plant detritus). Underestimation of nitrogen occurs when samples contain more than 20 mg N/l. 相似文献
